With the participation of professors in engineering from the United Kingdom and United States of America. A researcher at the Egyptian Russian University proposes equations that determine the design life of composite bridges using artificial intelligence.

Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Hassanin Mohamed, a lecturer in the Construction Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian Russian University, was able to develop equations that determine the design life of bridges with composite beams by studying the behavior of the composite beams under cyclic loads in order to strengthen them before reaching failure stage.

As one of the results of his research to obtain a doctorate degree; Under the supervision of a group of Egyptian and British structural engineering professors, in addition to an associate professor from the United States of America, they are: “Prof. Hesham Mohamed Fawzy, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor of Structural Engineering and Composite Structures, Zagazig University, Prof. Ahmed Ibrahim El-Sheikh, Former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor of Structural Engineering at Liverpool University in the United Kingdom, Prof. Osman Shaalan, President of Zagazig University, Professor of Structural Engineering at Zagazig University, and Prof. Messaoud Saidani, Professor and Head of the Structural Engineering Department at the College of Energy, Building and Environment at Coventry University in the United Kingdom. In addition to the research participation of Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdel Kader El-Sisi, Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Missouri, USA and a faculty member at Zagazig University.

Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Hassanein Mohamed, stated that the doctoral thesis that was discussed was entitled “The Effect of Cyclic Loads on the Externally Post-Tensioned Composite Beams”, and the thesis discusses the structural behavior of externally post-tensioned composite beams.

The lecturer in the Department of Construction Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian Russian University explained that a theoretical and numerical study was conducted to determine the best numerical analytical model to represent the beams with composite section externally strengthened with post-tensioned tendons using advanced modeling program

The researcher, indicated that the laboratory tests for this thesis were carried out in the reinforced concrete laboratories and heavy structures in the Faculties of Engineering in the Universities: “Egyptian-Russian, Zagazig, and Tanta”… explaining that the study was transformed from a practical laboratory study to a study of static loading on composite beams with or without external post-tensioning, and dynamic loading, which in turn is divided into two main types: “the first is propagated cyclic loading until collapse, and the second is fatigue loading, which is repetitive, dynamic loading for long periods,” and the number of loading cycles exceeds one million cycles, as the case in “industrial buildings”, which contain heavy machinery that generates repeated vibrations almost permanently and for long periods, or like vehicles that pass on bridges for long periods, and generate vibrations of low frequencies.

In a related context, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, revealed that an extensive parametric study was carried out that includes many variables, starting with fatigue tests with low amplitude, and loading cycles with a number exceeding one million cycles until reaching failure, which is similar to loads of repeated traffic on bridges for long periods of time, and the degree of shear connection between the concrete slab and the steel beam was changed with a decrease of 5% each time, and the study ended with the study of reducing the number of shear connectors in certain areas to reach the highest efficiency during loading and economy in the use of these connectors.

Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Hassanin Mohamed, pointed out that the results of this parametric study were used with the techniques of Neural Networks to determine new equations to indicate the design life of the composite beams subjected to cyclic loads over a long period of time, or fatigue, which is a serious structural problem that would reduce the design life of the structures or even lead to failure.

The lecturer in the Department of Construction Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian Russian University noted that the new equations achieved a correct prediction of the failure time  by more than 92%, in addition to the prediction of the mode of failure by 86%; Which gives the opportunity for the designer or operator of the structure to take the appropriate strengthening action, and this method is expected to have a significant impact on changing the future outlook of the existing and planned strengthening techniques, and it will also have a return on the structural level in terms of design and reduce the construction cost on the other hand and protect lives and investments.

It is worth mentioning that the researcher, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Hassanin, has published four research papers in four international, classified and indexed journals within the international publishers “Elsevier and Springer Nature”, in addition to another research in the international journal of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio; In line with the university’s research plan, and its keenness to provide the necessary capabilities and facilities for researchers at the university and to reach advanced positions in the scientific and research ranking of the university in Egypt, the Middle East and the world.

Moreover, the lecturer in the Department of Construction Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian Russian University, has other researches related to the interior design of hospitals; In order to achieve sustainability or the so-called green engineering, the main objective of this research is to shed light on the importance of cultural change in the design of the target spaces, and reconnecting individuals with patterns and organizations of nature, in urban areas, especially in hospitals, in line with the research plan of the Ministry of Higher Education and the international trend to intensify research in the field of climate and sustainable development.
