The Egyptian Russian University: A Future Vision and Student Innovations Towards International Excellence
Professor Dr. Sherif Fakhry, President of the Egyptian Russian University, emphasized that the university is striving to achieve a future vision aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030. Among the key objectives of this vision is linking the educational process to the evolving job market requirements. The university has identified specializations that align with market needs, resulting in the establishment of the faculty of Business Administration, Economics, and Business Technology. This faculty aims to integrate traditional commercial sciences with modern fields such as artificial intelligence and digitalization, introducing innovative specializations like digital banking, financial technology, alongside business technology. It is worth noting that the university celebrated the graduation of the first class from the Business Technology program this year.
Dr. Sherif added that the university’s faculty of Fine Arts prepares its graduates to become entrepreneurs, in addition to mastering traditional artistic disciplines.
To enhance student creativity, the Egyptian Russian University provides all the forms of support for student activities to showcase talents, develop skills, and express the hidden energies of students in various fields. The university also supports students’ participation in local and international competitions to gain valuable experiences. Students from the faculty of Applied Arts participated in the design competition for an advertising poster for the Grand Egyptian Museum, organized by the Infinity Group and Konica Minolta. The faculty achieved a high level in the competition, with the competition organizers praising the students’ level and the modern technological infrastructure of the faculty of Applied Arts at the university.
Moreover, students from the university’s faculty of Engineering won first place in the 8th International Military Technical College Competition (Team Ibrahim Salim Award) in the field of drone design and programming. Universities from various categories—governmental, international, private, and national—competed to design an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of being operated remotely and autonomously.
As part of the faculty of Engineering’s contribution to localizing smart electric car technology for sustainable community development, two undergraduate teams from the Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Program and the Telecommunications Engineering Program succeeded in securing financial support in the ITAC-ITIDA Initiative Graduation Project Competition—by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The students managed to convert a conventional gasoline-powered car with mechanical systems into an electric car, equipping it with smart automated vision systems. They built a complex system composed of a variety of systems: mechanical, control, embedded systems, digital networks, artificial intelligence, sensors, and adaptors.
The students also participated with their project in various competitions, winning first place among universities in the Valeo Tech Talents Demo competition, and achieving sixth place in the international innovation competition held by the Egyptian Military Academy.
This success followed previous achievements, as the faculty of Engineering at the Egyptian Russian University celebrated its team winning second place in the electric car rally (EVER-2019), organized by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, in which the university regularly participates.
For the first time, the Egyptian Russian University also participated in the 11th edition of the global “Mate ROV 2023” competition, which aims to build robotic submarines optimally designed to perform specific tasks underwater using artificial intelligence and remote control technologies. The university’s student team won the award for Best Performance and Outstanding Effort as a first-time participant.
Additionally, the Egyptian Russian University provides full support to scientific societies, allowing students to engage in various scientific activities by joining these societies. The university hosts the Scientific Society of the Egyptian Pharmacy Students Union, the Scientific Society of Communications, Electronics, and Artificial Intelligence (Tele Titan), the Scientific Society of the College of Artificial Intelligence (ERU Computality), and the Scientific Club of the Construction Engineering Department (New Vision).
This initiative seems important in enhancing student activities and increasing awareness of contemporary national issues. The Egyptian Russian University Youth Parliament was also established, aiming to simulate the workings of the Egyptian Parliament, raising awareness of parliamentary life in Egypt, and contributing students’ opinions on important national issues.
The university provides various sports facilities, including fields for football, basketball, handball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, padel tennis, and pickleball.
These sports achievements enhance the excellence and distinction of Egyptian Russian University students in various sports fields. The five-a-side football team won first place in the Private Universities and Institutes Championship for the academic year 2023/2024. Student Ahmed Mohamed Abou El-Magd, a member of the university’s athletics team, won first place and the gold medal in the javelin event at the same championship. Additionally, students Lili Ashraf and Shahd Yousry achieved first and second places in the Kung Fu Championship in the Egyptian Universities Sports League.
These successes enhance the university’s reputation as an institution that supports sports excellence and provides a suitable environment for students to develop their abilities in various fields. The continued successes contribute to fostering a sporting spirit and dedication among students, helping achieve a balance between academic studies and sports activities.
Professor Sherif Fakhry added that a new distinction has been added to the university’s accomplishments: the issuance of a scientific journal that has been included in the recognized journals of the Supreme Council of Universities for academic promotions. This achievement reflects the university’s strong commitment to scientific research and academic excellence, solidifying its position as one of the leading academic centers.
Professor Essam Khamis, the university’s academic development advisor, explained that the university adopts a comprehensive plan and vision aimed at keeping pace with global developments in university education and scientific research. These efforts have led to the modernization and introduction of many departments and academic programs that aim to enhance the national economy by graduating generations capable of creativity and production in technology and digitalization.
He noted that these developments have contributed to the university being listed in advanced international rankings. The university has also seen a significant increase in scientific research published in globally indexed journals on the “Scopus” platform, with the total number of published papers reaching 1,107, contributing to achieving fifteen of the Sustainable Development Goals. The university excelled in publishing research in the fields of pharmacy, toxicology and pharmacology, engineering, dentistry, and artificial intelligence. Statistics show that 48.6% of the university’s total scientific output was published in the top 25% of global journals, with international research collaboration accounting for 42.4% during the period 2021–2023.
