Dean’s message

Prof. Mohamed Oraby

Dear Parents, Dear Students,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Egyptian Russian University—a place where we do not simply educate artists who can draw, but cultivate individuals who see the world through a different lens and possess the ability to shape the future before the future shapes them.

Why Does Art Matter Today?

Some may ask: in an era driven by technology and artificial intelligence, does art still have a place?

The answer is simple: the more advanced technology becomes, the greater our need for people who possess human sensitivity, refined aesthetic judgment, and the capacity for creativity that no algorithm can replicate. The world needs more than individuals who can operate modern technologies; it needs those who can give them meaning, purpose, and soul.

A Foundation Year: Discovering Yourself Before Choosing Your Specialisation

Before introducing our five academic departments, I would like to reassure every student and parent of one fundamental principle that defines our educational philosophy.

We understand that many students arrive at university while they are still discovering their true artistic identity. For this reason, our Faculty offers a Foundation Year that does not require students to commit to a specialisation from the very beginning. Instead, it provides them with the opportunity to explore the various disciplines offered by the Faculty through hands-on learning under the guidance of experienced academics.

This exploratory year enables students to identify their genuine talents, interests, and creative potential before selecting their area of specialisation with confidence and informed judgment—not by chance. We do not want students who simply “end up” in a programme; we want students who deliberately choose the discipline that truly reflects their passion and aspirations.

Our Academic Departments

  • Visual Arts:

  • Visual Arts represents the foundation from which all other disciplines within the Faculty emerge. Here, students develop strong artistic fundamentals through drawing, oil painting, and sculpture—the timeless visual language whose value remains constant regardless of changing technologies or artistic trends. The department also encompasses Fine Printmaking, where students learn traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, including engraving and handcrafted processes passed down through generations, as well as Photography, which is taught as an art of perception before image-making, transforming every photograph into a complete artistic statement rather than a simple visual record.

  • Media Arts:

  • Building upon these artistic foundations, the Media Arts Department prepares a new generation of creative professionals capable of producing compelling visual and digital content that communicates with audiences across the globe through today’s multimedia platforms.

  • Visual Communication Arts:

  • In the Department of Visual Communication Arts, students learn how a single idea can influence millions through the effective design of visual messages. Combining creativity with strategic thinking, the programme equips graduates with the knowledge and practical skills required to compete successfully in both local and international creative industries.

  • Environmental Design:

  • The Department of Environmental Design empowers students to shape the cities, public spaces, and built environments in which we will all live tomorrow. We believe that the quality of our surroundings is not merely an aesthetic consideration but an essential contributor to quality of life. The department also includes a specialisation in Scenography, where students learn the art of designing theatrical spaces, live performances, exhibitions, and immersive environments, transforming empty spaces into meaningful visual experiences that support storytelling and audience engagement.

  • Puppet and Toy Design:

  • Finally—and perhaps the most distinctive feature of our Faculty—is the Department of Puppet and Toy Design, one of the newest and most unique academic specialisations in the region. This innovative programme opens the door to one of the world’s fastest-growing and most profitable creative industries. Students combine sculpture, three-dimensional form, materials exploration, movement anatomy, visual storytelling, and an understanding of both child psychology and consumer behaviour. Rather than simply learning how to manufacture toys in the traditional sense, students are trained to create characters with personality, narrative, and enduring visual identity—just as many internationally recognised characters have become lasting icons of global culture. The programme encompasses traditional and digital puppet design, three-dimensional modelling, additive manufacturing (3D printing), educational and recreational toy design, and strong integration with the animation and digital gaming industries as natural extensions of this creative field. Our graduates are prepared not only to participate in global creative industries but also to design innovative products capable of reaching international markets, contributing to the growth of local creative economies through export-oriented design.

A Message to Parents

Entrusting your son or daughter to pursue a degree in Fine Arts is undoubtedly a courageous decision—one that reflects confidence in a future that may appear unconventional to some. Allow me to assure you that today’s creative industries represent a global economy worth billions. The puppet and toy industry alone is among the world’s fastest-growing and most profitable sectors. More importantly, these professions belong to the future because they rely upon authentic human creativity—something no artificial intelligence or robotic system can truly replace.

Furthermore, your son or daughter will never be forced into an unsuitable discipline. Our Foundation Year is specifically designed to guide every student towards the specialisation that best matches their talent, interests, and creative ambitions.

A Message to Our Students

You are not here to learn only how art was created yesterday. You are here to create the art of tomorrow.

Take advantage of your Foundation Year to explore, experiment, and discover yourselves without fear or unnecessary pressure. You will make mistakes, you will try again, and through that journey you will realise that the greatest artists are not simply the most talented—they are the ones who dare to question, who remain curious, and who never stop learning.

We look forward to seeing you become the next generation of artists, designers, innovators, and creative leaders who will shape the future through imagination, knowledge, and artistic excellence.
