ERU Architecture Students on a Field Trip to the Religions Complex in Cairo

As part of the Faculty of Engineering vision to bridge the gap between academic study and practical application, and under the auspices of Prof. Alaa Mohamed Ahmed Al-Batsh, Dean of the Faculty, the Department of Architecture organized an educational field trip for students enrolled in the History of Architecture 2 course to the Religions Complex in Old Cairo.

The visit was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Faten Labib Mohamed, Head of the Department and course instructor, with the support of several academic staff members: TA Aya Mohamed, TA Nouran Mohamed, TA Reem Taher, TA Nada Samir, TA Sara Alaa, and Eng. Alaa Abdel Basset.

The tour aimed to give students firsthand exposure to Coptic architectural history. During the visit, students explored several prominent landmarks, including:

The Hanging Church

The Church of Abu Serga (Saints Sergius and Bacchus)

The Church of Mar Girgis (St. George)

The Church of the Virgin Mary

The Ben Ezra Synagogue

The visit focused on analyzing construction methods and decorative features that reflect Egyptian identity and illustrate the interaction of civilizations across the ages.

Such field trips are designed to enhance students’ awareness of the importance of preserving archaeological heritage. They also provide a valuable opportunity to study architectural elements that have endured for centuries, standing as a testament to the harmony and continuity of diverse cultures.
