In its Fourth Edition, with Participation of 15 Universities and Institutes, Egyptian Russian University Announces Winners of Robotics Competition… photos
Dr. Sherif Fakhry Mohamed Abd-el-Naby, President of the Egyptian Russian University (ERU), announced that the fourth edition of the “Robot Sumo,” robot wrestling competition, was organized on campus in the Faculty of Engineering with the participation of (15) universities and institutes. These student activities come as part of the university’s strategy to provide an interactive educational environment which stimulates creativity and innovation; especially with regard to the students’ technological activities. The competition was held with the full support of Dr. Mohamed Kamal Mustafa, Chairman of the University Council.
The ERU President explained that organizing such competitions in the field of competitive student activities enables students to have real competitive experiences which reinforce their readiness for joining the labor market. He emphasized that the university administration believes in the importance of investing in young minds, and supports initiatives which help develop the students’ practical and technical skills, and consolidate its position as a distinguished center for engineering and technological activities, especially in the area of modern and advanced academic programs.
In the same context, Dr. Alaa Mohamed Al-Batsh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the ERU, pointed out that the Robot Sumo competition provides students with the opportunity to apply what they study practically in a real competitive environment. He highlighted that the faculty helps in qualifying students with technical knowledge and skills , and developing their capacities in the areas of robotics, intelligent systems, and teamwork, since these are the language of the age in various fields: industrial, educational, agricultural, as well as other diverse and various fields.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the ERU stated that Huawei Academy at the university played a key role in organizing and preparing the competition, in terms of: “technical supervision, monitoring the teams’ preparation, organizing the judging mechanism, and the competitions,” as it took over the general supervision of all stages of preparation: “starting from setting the organizational vision for the competition, specifying the evaluation criteria, supervising the preparation of the competition arena, through monitoring the teams during the preparation period, and even managing the day of events with all its details.” He explained that preparatory meetings had been held with the organizing team and the judges to ensure the clarity of the judging mechanism and to accomplish the highest levels of fairness and transparency.
On his part, Dr. Tamer Saleh, Executive Director of Huawei Academy at the university and a Lecturer in the Department of Communications Engineering at the ERU, stated that during the stages of the competition, the goal was to motivate students to innovate and continuously develop, and to emphasize the importance of systematic engineering thinking, organized teamwork, and linking academic study with practical application, which contributes to preparing a generation that is capable of creativity and competition in advanced technological fields at both local and international levels. He pinpointed that the judging process in the competition was carried out by: Dr. Ahmed Hamdy, a Lecturer in the Department of Communications Engineering, and Engineer/ Ahmed Hatem, an external judge.
The Executive Director of Huawei Academy at the ERU asserted that all the competition rounds were supervised technically, and the performance of robots was evaluated according to the criteria of software accuracy, mechanical design efficiency, response speed, adherence to competition rules, and ensuring the rules were applied impartially. This is in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all participating teams. He added that (15) universities and institutes participated in the competition with (54) teams, as follows:
– The Egyptian Russian University with (12) teams.
– Suez Canal University with (11) teams.
– Zagazig National University with (6) teams.
– The Higher Technological Institute in Tenth of Ramadan City with (6) teams.
– The Chinese University with (5) teams.
– The Egyptian Chinese Faculty of Applied Technology (Suez Canal University) with (4) teams.
– Ismailia National University with (2) teams.
– Mansoura University has with (1) team.
– King Salman University with (1) team.
– Banha National University with (1) team.
– Beni Suef National University with (1) team.
– Al-Ahram Canadian University with (1) team.
– New Cairo University of Technology with (1) team.
– El Sewedy University of Technology with (1) team.
– Giza Higher Institute with (1) team.
Dr. Tamer Saleh added that the events were attended by a number of academic leaders, guests, and sponsors, most notably: Dr. Alaa Al-Batsh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Hesham Fathy, Dean of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU, Dr. Doaa Mohie-el-Deen from the Chinese University, and Engineer/ Ahmed Sobhy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Free Electronics Company. After strong competition and multiple elimination rounds, the results were as follows:
– First Place: “Furious” Team from Suez Canal University, comprised of students Ahmed Hussein, Mohamed Yehia, Ahmed Said, Tarek Shehata and Hamza Mohamed.
– Second Place: “Zenobot” Team from Zagazig University, comprised of students Said Mohamed, Ahmed Kamel, Zeyad Salah, Mo’men Ayman, and Omar Khalaf.
Third Place: “ZNUS” Team from Zagazig University, comprised of students Amr Badr, Youssef Al-Helaly, Mohamed Hosny, Khaled Al-Dawoudy, and Soad Al-Darandaly.
It is worth mentioning that the event was organized by the students of Huawei Academy at the ERU, namely: Malak Ibrahim, Mohamed Yasser, Mazen Mahmoud, Saif Wael, Shaza Ahmed, Aya Reda, Rawan Al-Sayed, Salma Adel, Mennat-Allah Sherif, Mennat-Allah Aly, Ammar Aly, Mohamed Al-Qassas, Yasmin Mohamed, Othman Mohamed, Nour-Alhoda Salah, Moataz Mahmoud, Abdullah Yasser, Aya Mohamed, Mariam Walid, Ezzat Sadek, Shahd Khaled, Shahd Yehia, Nadia Ahmed, Ibrahim Selim, Zeyad Ashraf, Saif-el-Islam Mahmoud, Hana Ahmed, Basant Emad, Ahmed Mahmoud Fawzy, Youssef Mahmoud, Omar Mohamed, Ereny George, Amira Gamal, Mariam Hesham, Bishoy Karam, Hala Ehab, Taha Mahmoud, Zeyad Bashir, Rawan Muneeb, Merna Matrawy, Maria Wagdy, Marwa Zahran, Saif-Allah Ahmed, Ahmed Mohamed Abd-el-Muneim, Ahmed Emad, Rawan Mohamed, Mohamed Al-Sayed, Haneen Murad and Youssef Ibrahim.
It is worth noting that at the conclusion of the events, commemorative gifts and certificates of appreciation were distributed to all participating teams, amidst widespread praise from the attendees for the level of organization and strong competition. The organizers of the competition affirmed that the next edition will witness greater participation and additional development in the competition mechanisms, which will enhance the status of the “Robot Sumo” competition as one of the student technological events at the level of Egyptian universities.
