Professor / Sherif Fakhry Mohamed Abd-el-Naby, President of the Egyptian Russian University (ERU), announced that the students of the “Faculty of Artificial Intelligence” participated with 3 important research papers on modern technologies and sustainable development in the International Conference on Machine Intelligence and Intelligent Innovation “ICMISI 2024”, which was organized by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport “AASTMT”. He pointed out that the students participated in that conference with the support of Dr. Mohamed Kamal Al-Sayed Mustafa, Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, in accordance with the framework of the university’s strategy to care for the students’ academic and research activities, whether within the university or at external conferences, especially with regard to scientific activities in the emerging research fields which are related to artificial intelligence.
The ERU President highlighted that five students and two assistant lecturers from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the university participated in research that was reviewed by international reviewers. He pointed out that these research papers are an extension of projects in deep learning courses from the “Artificial Intelligence Department,” as well as the Advanced Machine Learning Course from the “Data Science Department.” The presented research papers were of great importance in the various relevant fields.
In the same context, Dr. Hesham Fathy, from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU, confirmed that participation in the Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Innovation Conference “ICMISI 2024,” which is one of the most important and prestigious conferences, contributes to the development of students’ skills and helps them build distinguished career paths. These papers will be published in IEEE Xplore, which is an indexed database in Scopus. This adds great academic value to the works submitted by the university students.
The Dean of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU stated that the submitted research papers include:
1- Evaluation of Tomato Maturity, “CNN” model versus “VGG16” model.
The author: the student “Salma Maged,” under the supervision of Eng. / Aya Adel, Eng. / Mohamed Tawfiq, and Dr. Wael Badawy.
This paper discussed how to employ the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) model and the VGG16 model for evaluating tomato maturity. The paper presented accurate results of comparisons between the two models, which helps improve automated classification techniques for agricultural products. Conducting such a paper enhances the students’ skills in applying deep learning to real-life problems. This opens up professional opportunities for the students in the fields of smart agriculture and image analysis.
2- Dental diagnostics – a framework based on the “YOLOv8” model
The author: the student “Salma Maged,” under the supervision of Eng. / Aya Adel, Eng. Mohamed Tawfiq, and Dr. Wael Badawy.
This paper presented a diagnostic framework that is based on the “YOLOv8” model for detect dental problems by using medical images. This work indicates the great potential of artificial intelligence techniques in improving medical diagnosis and reducing human errors. Through this paper, the students have acquired valuable experience in the medical applications of artificial intelligence, enabling them to pursue careers in the area of technical health care.
3- Developments in recognizing the language of the deaf and mute, known as American Sign Language “ASL”: a framework based on “YOLOv8”.
The authors: the students Mohamed Hesham Imam, Abd-el-Rahman Ghaly, Ahmed Mustafa, Aly Ayman; under the supervision of Eng. /Mohamed Tawfiq, Eng. / Aya Adel and Dr. Wael Badawy.
This paper reviewed the application of the “YOLOv8” model to improve American Sign Language recognition; which enhances communication tools for people with special needs. This research represents an important step towards developing helpful technology that supports deaf and dumb people. This in turn enhances their integration into society. The paper, thus, gave the students a rich experience in developing applications that have a significant social and humanitarian impact.
In the same context, Dr. Wael Badawy, Head of the Data Science Department at the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU, who is the supervisor of this research, said that presenting such a research at a prestigious conference as “ICMISI” enhances the academic and professional status of students. This experience, therefore, provides students with the following important benefits:
* Practical experience: enabling students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real problems, which in turn enhances their theoretical and practical understanding of the topics.
* Professional network: The conference provides an opportunity for students to communicate with experts and professionals in the field of artificial intelligence, which enables them to build a strong professional network.
* Improving their CVs: The students’ contributions to research papers which are published in prestigious conferences enhance their attractiveness to future employers.
* Employment opportunities: The knowledge and experience acquired from this research opens doors to employment opportunities in advanced fields such as machine learning, smart health care and smart agriculture.
Dr. Wael Badawy added that, through these participations, students demonstrate a great ability to innovate and be creative, which paves the way for them to have a promising professional future in the fields of technology and artificial intelligence. In addition, the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence provides a forum for students to be trained and to implement the latest technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This consequently helps them achieve distinguished academic and professional achievements. Such success reflects the faculty’s commitment to developing students’ skills and enabling them to accomplish achievements, which paves the way for them to have a promising professional future in the fields of technology and artificial intelligence.
For her part, the student Salma Maged, at the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU expressed her happiness with the faculty and university’s support for presenting research papers and said, “It was a very rich experience as it gave me the opportunity to interact with international experts and exchange innovative ideas that would enhance my scientific development and open up new career horizons for us.”
Concerning the same topic, the student Mohamed Hesham, at the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at the ERU, said that the experience of presenting my research at the Naval Academy Conference, on using “the area of artificial intelligence” in interpreting American Sign Language, was an incredibly rich experience. This opportunity gave me the chance to present the results of my research to a group of distinguished specialists and researchers. It enhanced my ability to communicate scientifically and gained me wide recognition in the academic community. Without any doubt, this experience will play a major role in advancing my scientific career and opening up the way before me for conducting more advanced research and for achieving fruitful cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.
