“The City Pulse”, A Workshop for ERU Fine Arts Students
As part of the summer training program, and under the auspices of Professor Dr. Mohamed Orabi, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, and in cooperation with Cairo Urban Studio, students from the Department of Environmental Design participated in a five-day workshop entitled “The City Pulse.”
The workshop aimed to enhance students’ abilities to observe urban challenges and propose solutions that respect the unique character of historic districts while addressing the needs of the local community.
The area of Bab Zuweila and the entrance to Khayamiya district were selected as the workshop’s field site due to their distinctive heritage and urban qualities. The program included:
A field visit to assess the current conditions and identify key issues.
Four days of group work, with students collaborating under the supervision of faculty members and support staff.
The presentation of six diverse projects offering solutions to the area’s challenges.
The submitted projects underwent academic discussion and evaluation with the participation of professors from the Environmental Design Department, along with distinguished guests:
Prof. Ashraf El-Mahdawy, Professor of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Matariya (external evaluator)
Eng. Salem Hussein, Urban Planner and Founder of the Cairo Urbanism Studio platform
Following the evaluation, three student groups were awarded first place in recognition of the quality of their presentations and the creativity of their proposed solutions.
Best wishes for continued success and excellence.
